Club hailed Scrunchies' knack for \"packing riot grrrl punk,\u003cbr\u003esneering garage rock, and pummeling post-punk grooves into a singular package\u003cbr\u003ewithout skimping on earworm hooks.\" On new album Colossal, the band fully delivers\u003cbr\u003eon that promise; first single \"The Empire\" rips forth, urgently, raggedly, while the\u003cbr\u003eintertwining vocals of Larson and Cusack soar irresistibly and demand repeated plays.\u003cbr\u003eIn Larson's own words, the song is \"thrashy, poppy, and grunge-adjacent.\"\u003cbr\u003eGrunge-adjacent indeed, Colossal was recorded by none other than Steve Albini at\u003cbr\u003eElectrical Audio in Chicago, and features the very same Veleno guitar that was used in\u003cbr\u003ethe recording of Nirvana's In Utero. Colossal is an \"AAA\" production – recorded,\u003cbr\u003emixed, and mastered entirely with analog gear and tape.\u003cbr\u003e\"Working with Steve was amazing,\" recalls Larson, \"not only because of the impact his\u003cbr\u003ework has had on us for the majority of our musical careers, but because from the minute\u003cbr\u003ewe walked into the studio it was immediately a comfortable, honest experience. We\u003cbr\u003etrusted him and he trusted us. It meant the world to us to be able to do this project with\u003cbr\u003ehim.\" One of the final works to be created by the revered Albini before his passing this\u003cbr\u003eyear, the album was mastered by Greg Obis (Deeper, Dehd).\u003cbr\u003eColossal is a triumph, but a long road has led here; the members of Scrunchies have\u003cbr\u003ebeen entrenched in Minneapolis' thriving DIY scene for decades. Notably, Larson was a\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003emember of Minneapolis punks Kitten Forever, whose feminist energy and bass-and-\u003cbr\u003edrums bashing earned tours with the likes of Screaming Females and made a fan out of\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003equeer icon JD Samson. The band's 16-year run came to a close during the making\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eof Colossal and Larson states that the experience shaped the album: \"It is as significant\u003cbr\u003eas a long term relationship ending and exploring that shift is a big part of the content.\"\u003cbr\u003eThe same feminism that fueled Kitten Forever now courses through Scrunchies, but\u003cbr\u003eLarson opts for surreal lyrics instead of overt messaging. (\"The Empire\" opens with\u003cbr\u003ethese abstractly empowering lines: \"There’s no chain on the apex \/ It’s science fiction \/\u003cbr\u003ePass the hours on ascending wire \/ If it clings to you it’s a parasite.\")\u003cbr\u003e\"As with all of my projects, feminist themes run throughout the album,\" says Larson,\u003cbr\u003e\"with an exploration of the insidiousness of modern gender expectations, power, bodies,\u003cbr\u003eand a slightly repulsive narrative of womanhood as deli meat made of the magician's\u003cbr\u003eassistant from a sawed-in-half trick... I write lyrics that veer more towards surrealistic\u003cbr\u003eand poetic imagery with the hope that they can resonate with people in different ways\u003cbr\u003ethat are impactful to them.\"\u003cbr\u003eWith Kitten Forever and other past projects in the rearview, Scrunchies takes center\u003cbr\u003estage. While a majority of bands in the scene take a stance against organized\u003cbr\u003ereligion, the band flips the script and claims allegiance with the Saints of the 1830s,\u003cbr\u003eholding them up as victims of the state's tyranny.\u003cbr\u003eOlsen states: \"The struggle against fascist, violent oppression of 'undesirables' is\u003cbr\u003euniversal. We use a very fucked-up moment of hyper localized American history to relay\u003cbr\u003ethat message for the fight against oppression. It’s a purely antiauthoritarian band. Don’t\u003cbr\u003elet anyone tell you who to love or who to worship.\"\u003cbr\u003eJohnson concurs: “Missouri Executive Order 44 is a reminder that we, as decent human\u003cbr\u003ebeings, need to stand together in communities and collectives to overthrow tyrannical\u003cbr\u003eauthority and prevent the impending destruction of our autonomy by the bigoted forces\u003cbr\u003eof the state, police, and fascists. The story of our Mormon ascendants is cautionary but\u003cbr\u003ealso too familiar to the experiences of our brothers and sisters. The state can and will\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eoppress those it deems 'other' or 'less than' and our message is one of retribution, anti-\u003cbr\u003ecolonialism, anti-state and pro-humanity.”\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRecorded and mixed by the band and mastered by Will Killingsworth (Orchid, The\u003cbr\u003eBody), Salt Sermon clocks in at just fifteen minutes. From sasscore twang to blackened\u003cbr\u003enoisecore, the album drives forward darkly, relentlessly, with Johnson holding court like\u003cbr\u003ea manic preacher. Reference points might include Cursed, Coalesce, The\u003cbr\u003eLocust, and Heavy Heavy Low Low. Olsen calls it, simply, \"Great Plains Hardcore...\u003cbr\u003elike the sporadic chaos of a herd of steer left to stampede across an empty prairie.\" Tying\u003cbr\u003etogether the songs are ominous samples: distorted field recordings of sermons, Sunday\u003cbr\u003eschool lessons, and excerpts from religious audiobooks.\u003cbr\u003eSumming up Salt Sermon, Johnson gives this description: “This album is a series of\u003cbr\u003estories and vignettes that lay clear a few simple ideas: every person deserves love, every\u003cbr\u003eperson deserves autonomy, every person deserves a place to call home on this earth, and\u003cbr\u003ethe radical acceptance of love is a powerful weapon against tyranny.”\u003cbr\u003eSince forming less than two years ago, Missouri Executive Order 44 has played shows\u003cbr\u003ewith The Callous Daoboys, Portrayal of Guilt, Heavenly Blue, Frail\u003cbr\u003eBody, Bib, Knoll, and dozens more. Salt Sermon follows the band's 2023 debut\u003cbr\u003eEP, Seventeen Dead in Caldwell County. While the band members bear striking\u003cbr\u003eresemblances to ex-members of bands such as the late, great Bummer, and have\u003cbr\u003eperhaps been spotted volunteering their time at thriving DIY venues like Farewell and\u003cbr\u003eHowdy on Kansas City's east side, Johnson, Olsen, Fullmer, and Hatch choose to\u003cbr\u003ecommit fully to the MEO44 concept and not reveal any hard facts about their lives\u003cbr\u003eoutside the project. For a long time I have felt that a band using music as a  means for calling out corrupt political powers was kind of 'low hanging fruit' and it  seemed like a cheap gimmick. But frankly, someone has to do it. There needs to be a sea  change.
